Evansville Weather for Monday, January 21st, 2013

Arctic Air has started to return this morning in the Tri-State and the Midwest following a cold front passage on Sunday. As I write this at 5AM, temps in the Tri-State are in the mid-20s, with wind chills ranging from the signal digits to lower 20s.

Cold air will be sweeping in the Tri-State starting today and lasting until Tuesday Night. Temps for today will only reach the upper 20s in some locations. Overnight, however, we will see temps reach the signal digits with wind chill reading at or below zero. High pressure will move in late on Tuesday, but our temps will stay in the upper teens to lower 20s. We start to see a warm up on Wednesday as winds turn from the south, causing our temps to be or just above the freezing line. We will be watching the development of a warm front heading our way that looks to give us a chance of precipitation late Wednesday.

That warm front will push our temps for Thursday into the mid-40s with a chance of rain. Low pressure and a cold front will push through during the overnight hours, putting temps below freezing, and possible cause snow in some locations. Too early at this time to see just how much snow we could get. Possible rain/snow mix for Friday and turning breezy and cold with winds turning back from the northwest and temps in the mid-30s. High pressure just west of the Mississippi will give way to cold and breezy conditions on Saturday, before moving towards the South East States on Sunday to bring way to more mild conditions.

Winter Storm Euclid Update

Winter Storm #Euclid still has some uncertainty as for where it will be heading. At this time, Christmas Day is looking to be mostly cloudy with highs from the mid-30s to the lower 40s across Illiana and the Tri-State. What will be happening next is what I am watching. The track from the GFS and EURO puts the central pressure, or main part of this storm, near Louisiana and Mississippi at 0z Wednesday, or 6PM CST Christmas. The lost will then start heading towards the northeast and be in Central Tennessee by 12z, or 6AM CST Wednesday, Central Kentucky at 18z, or Noon CST, and being heading towards the northeast by 0z Thursday, or 6PM CST Wednesday. Below is a list of all watches out as of 10PM EST tonight and a full report on what may just be happening.

Tri-State
Blizzard Watch for Saline, Gallatin, Union, Wabash, Posey, Spencer, Webster, Vanderburgh, Edwards, Hamilton, Wayne, Pike, White, Henderson, Warrick until Noon CST Wednesday; Winter Storm Watch for Richland, Lawrence, Clay until 6PM CST Wednesday; Winter Storm Watch for Knox, Daviess, Martin until 7PM EST Wednesday; Winter Storm Watch for Dubois until 7PM EST Wednesday.

The Tri-State is looking to get the worst and the most headaches of this storm. This is looking to start out as a rain or rain/snow mix late Christmas Day. This will turn into an all snow event for one half of the Tri-State, while the other will see either rain or a rain/snow mix. If you are under the Blizzard Watch, you will be seeing snow. If you are under a Winter Storm Watch, either snow or rain/snow mix for you. If you are not under any watch, you will see an all rain event. If you are living east and south of a line drawn from Evansville down to Paducah, you will be right on the rain/snow mix. How much snow will see? I have had to update that. I think we will see anywhere from 6-12” with some areas maybe reporting over 13”. Along with the snow, you might hear thunder. Yes, the conditions are just right for you to hear thunder in this storm.

Illiana
Winter Storm Watch for Sullivan, Boone, Montgomery, Vermillion, Warren, Fountain, Parke, Vigo, Tippecanoe, Monroe, Clay, Owen, Greene, Putnam until 7PM EST Wednesday; Vermilion, Champaign, Douglas, Crawford, Edgar, Clark, Effingham, Jasper, Coles, Cumberland until 6PM CST Wednesday.

Not that much for me to go over for Illiana. This will be an all snow event. Snow should start to fall just before Midnight on Christmas Night and keep on snowing into Wednesday before ending around sunset. Snow totals will range from 5-9” with 10-12” in isolated locations. Most of the heaviest snow should fall just north of I-70.

For everyone
Winds will be gusting 30+MPH on Wednesday, causing blowing and drifting snow and visibility to drop below 1/2mile at times. As it has been said before, if you do not have to travel, do not. Snow crews and emergency personal will already be busy and the last thing they want is someone on the roads who does not need to be on them. I plan on having updates during Christmas Day and Wednesday.

Clear tonight and for Thursday, but that all starts to change late in the day Thursday. A cold front will move in late Thursday Night into early Friday morning bringing with it rain and cold air. Rain will be all day and with gusty winds coming out of the north, it will be really cold. Highs might be lucky to even get into the mid-50s. Friday Night, rain chances stay at 45%, still breezy with lows reaching near 40, some locations around the Tri-State will get into the upper 30s with wind chills being a factor. Chance of rain for Saturday morning, but we start to clear out during the day. Sunday thru Wednesday, skies stay sunny to mostly sunny with highs in the mid-50s. Overnight Saturday thru Tuesday, lows will be in the 30s. We could wake up Monday morning with a low of 34.

One more night and day of nice weather before the rain and colder air moves in. The front will move in during the evening hours and will start to push our temps down. Normally cloud cover and rain overnight would normally push our temps down a little bit, but this time the winds will be out of the north and coming in at 25-30mph. Rain still staying for Friday and it will be colder with highs most likely getting into the lower 50s. Friday Night, front will move on out and rain should start to end. However, temps will be cold into the mid-30s. Chance of rain for Saturday morning, but clouds will then start to decrease. Sunday thru Wednesday looking nice with mostly sunny to sunny skies and temps in the lower 50s. Overnight lows for Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday will be in the lower 30s. If we have enough moisture around, we might see a snow flurry or two around. Putting in a chance of rain late for Wednesday evening, Halloween, so the kids are going to have to dress warm and be ready in case it does rain.

Chance of showers still for the overnight hours, but it should end after the Midnight hour. Wednesday, overnight, and Thursday look to be nice with skies staying clear. Cold front will start to sweep into Illiana in the evening hours and will drop temps into the mid-40s. We will be breezy during the overnight, so we might be talking about wind chills into the upper 30s. Rain still staying for Friday and part of the overnight hours also with temps just being cold. Saturday thru Tuesday staying nice with temps in the lower 50s and lows getting near freezing.
